Sleep? What’s That?

Friday night and Saturday were spent running a charity tournament (I did, in fact, volunteer to run it… the family involved is very important to me and because I’m a girl who gets emotional, a lot, I cried when we gave them the money and then I cried a little more because I realized just how much I miss them and then I stopped crying and someone started talking to me about how great it was and I started crying again).

Here were my two days:

Friday – Wrote my fingers off most of the day.  Did get a short nap (20 minutes).  Then packed up all my computer equipment and electronics (tablet, laptop, printer, SO’s tablet, back-up tablet, mouse because the one on my keyboard sucks, laptop board because I just always pack it), extra ink, paper cardstock, my Jamberry bag (yes, I have an entire bag and I had ladies coming to the tournament that wanted to try the lacquers and no, I’m not a consultant), donation items for the auction, and donation items for the raffle.  I slapped on some Jamberry Gunmetal Lacquer and took Lola outside to play for 30 minutes (turned out my nails weren’t entirely dry, so they sort of looked awful by the time we got done running, playing fetch with a stick, and playing fetch with a ball).  My SO got home, I packed the car while he changed and we headed to the tournament.  There was a homestyle meal of fried chicken with lots of fixings (my plate could have held 1/4 of the food it contained and I still would have been full).  Then I hastily unpacked all my equipment and set up for the events of the evening.  During this time, I was also trying to manage Who Am I? Serial Killer Edition on my Facebook page.  Got home at 1 am, with McDonald’s, because dinner had been 7 1/2 hours earlier.  Lola decided she wasn’t ready to go back to bed… She wanted to play.  She finally let us fall asleep a little after 3 am.  I did not sleep well.

Saturday:  Got up at 7:30 am (I NEVER get up that early… I need about 6 1/2 hours of sleep and usually go to bed at 2:00 am), showered, took Lola out, packed some of the electronics back in the car (I never ever ever leave my laptop unguarded for more than a few minutes, I even take it with me to darts when I go to league).  Got to the dart hall at 9 am.  Got the first event started a little late.  Started Who Am I? Serial Killer Edition on Facebook.  Spent the day trying to manage a tournament, a raffle, a 50/50 drawing, and an auction (thank God for friends who are auctioneers).  Bought too much stuff, including a 5 feet x 9 feet Jagermeister flag (no idea what I’m going to do with it, but it looked cool).  Cried while presenting the money.  Cried more when I talked to the family.  Cried again when someone congratulated me on how well everything went.  Didn’t think to blame the crying on my lack of sleep, until 10 seconds ago. Got everything packed, loaded into the car, and made it home by 9 pm (with Subway… We did a fish fry today and I’m allergic, so I ate Doritos and peanuts all day).  Ate dinner, played with Lola, balanced my checkbook, got depressed because my checkbook looks very sad right now, and made plans to go to bed.  Then I remembered I needed to find some more obscure and harder serial killers, because everyone is getting the Who Am I? usually on the first guess.  So, I started researching.  Realized it was midnight, checked Facebook, started several conversations, then wrote this blog post.

Sunday:  Sleeping in.  Watching the Superbowl.  Might take a nap.  Will definitely write a lot.

The problem is, despite being exhausted, I’m just not used to going to bed at 12:30… I always go to bed at 2.  So, I’m still up on Saturday night with 1 1/2 hours until bedtime. Maybe I’ll write for that time… or play a video game.  It could go either way at this moment.

(PS:  Should have another cover to show soon!)

Give The Gift Of Cain

Flash sale for Elysium Dreams, the second Dreams & Reality novel.  It will be priced $0.99 all day on 23 September 2014.  If you’ve been reluctant to buy it, because it is so much different than Tortured Dreams (or because you weren’t entirely sure you liked Tortured Dreams), now is your chance to try it cheap.  For those that have read it, now is a good time to give the gift of Aislinn Cain to a reader you think might enjoy it without it costing you an arm and a leg (or $3.99).

For those waiting on Butchered Dreams, the sixth Dreams & Reality novel, pre-orders will begin on 14 October 2014 and the novel will release on 14 November (yeah, I’m that close to being done… beta readers beware, I expect it to arrive in your inboxes on 1 October).  🙂  Cover review on 1 October 2014!

Explosive Dreams Cover Reveal & Description

Explosive Dreams by Hadena JamesBright midways, rides with loud music and flashing lights, barkers trying to get people to spend   money on rigged games; the normal sounds of county fairs everywhere until an explosion rips through the tinny music of the carnival rides.  Now the screams are not squeals of delight but the terrified shrieks of the dying.

The danger is no longer imaginary, something to shrug off when the ride is over.  A killer is studying each fair, looking for that special ride that will rain down the most horror.  The bombs he sets brings complete destruction.  They leave a dirty field covered in broken bodies and crumpled machinery.

The Serial Crimes Tracking Unit has their hands full searching for his next target and sifting through bodies.  Aislinn Cain is having trouble getting into the mindset of the bomber.  Her failure to relate makes the body count climb.  Then the unimaginable, a member of the SCTU gets cut down.  How far will Aislinn go to get justice for her fallen friend and catch the killer?

Kudos to Angela with Covered Creatively for her hard work to get this cover done in a very limited deadline.  I think she nailed it!

Oops!

My calendar has a big note on it today: Cover Reveal for Elysium Dreams. Only I forgot to order it.  How does one forget to order a book cover?  It isn’t on my calendar.

I have a notoriously bad memory.  I forgot to make plans today to meet my exercise buddy.  I remembered at 6:45 a.m. when my alarm went off.  If I don’t put it on my calendar, it is quite likely I will forget.

So, my plan for today is to start editing (the edits are back) and order my book cover for Elysium Dreams.  Luckily, Kelly with EZ Book Covers can produce the cover in a week, I’m still on track.  And the cover is planned out in my head…

Now go forth and do interesting things, while I run around like a chicken without a head trying to get things done.

Before I was a Writer…

It dawned on my yesterday, as I switched from website to website, that my browsing history has significantly changed.

Before I was writing almost full time, I was surfing the web for video games, cheat codes, add-ons, free ebooks that caught my attention, movies that were coming out on DVD (so I could add them to my Netflix list), checking out band websites, etc.

Now, I don’t.  The ebooks tend to get emailed to me as I join more and more places that promote indy authors.  I don’t have much time for video games – so the searches for cheat codes and add-ons are pointless, I have almost no clue what my favorite bands are planning unless they post the to Facebook and most of movies come from recommendations made by others.

Why?  Simple, I don’t have that sort of time on my hands anymore.  I use Chrome to navigate and the “home page” is eight mini-windows with my most common websites.  They are “Facebook, KDP, Smashwords, PubIt!, CreateSpace, WordPress, Goodreads and Google.”

Since examples are better than just saying it.  I’ll give you my week:

Monday – blog post written, 9,000 words added to Dark Resurrections, followed by coming home, fixing dinner, doing laundry, checking on reviews and spending about an hour looking for places to advertise that wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg, then bedtime.

Tuesday – Blog post, the creation of a book tour comparison database, 2,000 words added to Dark Resurrections, ordering proofs of Tortured Dreams, looking for swag items for Tortured Dreams, dinner, the realization that I could do a Nadine Daniels’ Novella if I got my butt in gear.

Wednesday – Cover created for The Dysfunctional Valentine, blog post, 8,000 words put on The Dysfunctional Valentine, dinner at Arby’s, dart league, when I got home, I added another 1,000 words to the novella, then I went to bed.

Thursday – Blog post, 4,000 words added to The Dysfunctional Valentine which sparked some thoughts on Elysium Dreams, so I took some time and added 5,000 words to Elysium Dreams, dinner, my SO watched TV, I went back to writing and added another 2,000 words to The Dysfunctional Valentine.

Friday – Blog post, 7,000 words added to The Dysfunctional Valentine BEFORE LUNCH (Yes, I typed my fingers off to get there).  Lunch with editor who took it home.  Afternoon spent looking for cheap advertising and working on Dark Resurrections. Went out for dinner with an old friend I hadn’t seen in ages.  Came home, back to work on Dark Resurrections.

Saturday – Blog post, 30 minute conversation with editor, some rewriting on The Dysfunctional Valentine, added 4,000 words to Dark Resurrections, ebook formatting for Tortured Dreams, cover reveal on Facebook for TDV, dinner, watched a movie, went to bed.

Today – Blog post, meeting with editor in a couple of hours, meeting with the Columbia Novelists’ Group, dinner will be after that, lunch will be shoved in somewhere and if I’m lucky, I’ll get some more writing done.

I know that doesn’t seem like a lot, but in reality, it is, this also doesn’t take into account the time I spend talking to people on Facebook or WordPress or Goodreads or answering emails about my inquiries into advertising and book tours.  It also doesn’t take into account the fact that I check my sales daily, sometimes multiple times per day.

And people wonder why I tell them they have to have passion to be a writer.
