Every so often, someone asks what do you do for a living? Well, I write books, mostly serial killer thrillers/horror. It’s usually followed by an awkward pause. They are thinking about that statement, because 2 things have just happened in their mind:
- Can someone actually make money writing books? – Yes, yes they can. I do. Several other authors I know do. You don’t have to be a New York Times Bestseller to make a decent monthly income.
- She doesn’t look like she writes serial killer thrillers… – And I don’t. I look totally normal. Most people imagine people who write hardcore serial killer books to be, deranged looking or at least, not like me.
As a matter of fact, several people have cracked jokes about it thinking I was kidding. So, I send them to look at my books, usually Elysium Dreams and then wait.
I know. If you meet me at a local restaurant or see me in a store, nothing about me screams “she must be out of her friggin’ mind.” Nor does it even whisper “might have a really dark side.”
It’s one of the most interesting obstacles of my job. And believe it or not, lots of people are shocked to find out I really do write serial killer novels with more blood and gore than your average horror movie (this goes double for Fortified Dreams which might be my goriest book to date).
The surprise only deepens when they find out that both Tortured Dreams, Elysium Dreams, and Mercurial Dreams have each spent several weeks on the Amazon Bestseller’s List.
I just seem so normal. 😀
