The Kindle Children’s Book App

Yesterday, Amazon Publishing launched it’s “Children’s Book App.”  It’s a formatter for publishers of children’s books.  Now, I’m not rushing out and writing a children’s book, let’s be realistic, it’s hard to put blood and gore into a book for kids (I have considered a Dreams & Reality pop-up book with each page being a different serial killer at work with pull tabs, flaps, the whole nine-yards).  However, I did download the app and start messing around with it.

For people more talented than me, it’s pretty nifty!  I hate to format.  I also hate paying someone else to format for me (it’s not that I can’t, it’s that I’m lazy).  The app allows you to upload your own illustrations, arrange them into a book format and add text without worrying about complicated formatting.  If I could draw, I’d so screw around with, uploading my own illustrations just to get a better understanding of it… unfortunately, even my stick figures aren’t recognizable as people… so I’ll stick to writing thrillers with lots of blood and gore.

It did get me thinking.  I know someone who has been asking me about how to do a kid’s book.  My answer has been the same, find a formatter for your illustrations.  Now, that isn’t necessarily a requirement.  Of course, it would have to be a Kindle exclusive, but I’m finding more and more authors are becoming KDP Select members.  On the flip side, it isn’t terribly hard to change a mobi to a PDF or an epub, so maybe it isn’t as exclusive as it seems.

Anyway, just something new and nifty.
