Reviewing A Series

The first book in each of my series have far more reviews than the preceding books. It isn’t a mystery as to why, some reviewers didn’t like it, some liked it, but not enough to leave a review…. However, for everyone else, I’d like to share a little secret.

When I look at a series and check reviews, I do it for all of the available books, not just the first. I am looking to see if the series holds up over the duration of all the books. If I find a trilogy with lots of reviews for the first book, but almost none for the second and third, it makes me cautious about investing my time in the series.

If I find a series I love, I try to review each book, even if I like one less than the others.

As an author, I find this lack of review continuity annoying. If I was looking at the Dreams and Reality series solely as a reader, I’d wonder what was wrong with Mercurial Dreams and Explosive Dreams. Why can’t the author keep a following? As the author of the series, I can say that I do keep a following. It’s over 80%. But you can’t tell it from the reviews.

So here’s my request, if you like a series, review all of it, not just the first book. It helps readers see that the series is worth the investment.

  1. I agree. Catskinner’s Book has thirty six reviews, Cannibal Hearts has eight. The numerical average is actually higher for the second book, but far fewer people chose to review it.

Yes, I agree – but I’ll be honest – sometimes for me it’s not that I didn’t read the book or even write the review – sometimes I forget to cross post to more than just the blog – I need to get better at that

    • Yes because I actually had someone ask me “what goes wrong with Mercurial Dreams?” And it’s because Tortured & Elysium have so many more reviews.
