For the last several months, I’ve been having trouble with nightmares.  I thought it was Explosive Dreams, because they started while I was writing that book.  Recently, I’ve been told that it probably isn’t my writing.

Since February, I’ve had symptoms of premature menopause.  I have PCOS, it’s a possibility.  I haven’t actually bothered to have the blood work done because that isn’t going to change the fact that I’m either in it or that my depo-provera birth control has some strange side effects (and I can’t get off depo, so…).  We decided at the last appointment to get my shot that I’d keep a log and we’d test them in November.

Nightmares are a part of the log.  I’ve been having lots of them lately.  Strange dreams, like nothing I’ve ever experienced before, like being chased by dragons is not normal for me.  I haven’t increased my exposure level to dragons, as a matter of fact, I rarely think about them at all.  So why are they spending two or three nights a week chasing me?  I don’t know.

However, a doctor told me that while the research is mostly anecdotal, it isn’t uncommon for women in menopause to report an increase in nightmares.  Great, one more thing to keep me awake at night.  I already have more nightmares than the average adult.  Now, my hormones are going to increase them?

Like it isn’t bad enough to have hot flashes, night-sweats and the bladder of a newborn, oh and let’s not forget the sudden mood swings… I can become irate over my shoe coming untied or cry because I dropped a bag of chips and they broke… but we get to add nightmares to the list of symptoms.  I can’t remember the last time I slept for more than 2 or 2 1/2 hours straight.

And now I believe all of this is causing problems with my writing, mainly that I just don’t want to do it because I could be taking a nap instead.

My sleep patterns have been weird too lately but most of the time if I have a dream or a nightmare I don’t seem to remember it – I am waking up more from night sweats though and that does sux!
