Digging For Water

He stared into the hole and then at the mound of dirt the backhoe had excavated.  For several minutes, his gaze moved between the two, trying to make sense of it.  There were supposed to be water pipes there.  Instead, it was an empty hole.

He wasn’t sure which disturbed him more, the lack of water pipes, the lack of bones, or the skull sitting upright on the pile of dirt.
