Spritzing – Become A Speed Reader!

My writing chum, Roger Radford, sent me a link today for a new app coming out for Galaxy.  It’s called Spritz and you can test it here:  http://www.spritzinc.com/#.  It is designed to make us all speed readers.

It sounds like a good idea.  It sounds like a great idea actually.  I’m not a speed reader, but I read fast and occasionally I get tired of tapping the screens on my ereaders to get to the next page.  This is worse because I now have to have a slightly larger font because my eyes just aren’t what they used to be.

This is how it works: the words move, not your eyes and there is a focal point within each word to keep you focused.

So, I tried it out…  I wonder if their focus groups and beta testers included any people with neurological disorders…  I’m thinking probably not.  In general, I read between 400 and 500 words per minute.  I started the test at the 250 wpm and did fine.  It was actually slow.  I upped it to 350.  No problem.  At 400, my normal reading speed, I started having issues.  I felt “off.”  There’s no other way to say it.  The three or four sentences that blazed past me made me feel off.  I upped it to 500.

I didn’t finish the text.  I realized that it was triggering a migraine.  That was the “off” feeling I was getting… Vertigo and a migraine.

The word has a different coloration for the focal point.  They change shapes based on the length of the words.  And honestly, my brain seems to think it is scrolling.

So, will I be a spritzer?  Probably not…
