Commercials After Midnight

I prefer during the week to not be awake after midnight.  However, the last several nights, I’ve had some sleep issues.  This is due to a number of factors; stress, writing late at night, and needing a new pillow are just a few of them.

What I have discovered is that after midnight, certain cable channels become a haven for adult oriented commercials.  My SO has been falling asleep watching Duck Dynasty.  I’m not a Duck Dynasty fan, preferring something a little more… I don’t know, something very different.  I can’t actually turn the TV off when I come to bed or he wakes up and then he grumbles for an hour or two because he is awake.  So I switch channels, usually there’s an episode of Cops or World’s Dumbest… on somewhere.  The past couple of nights, it’s been Cops: Reloaded a quasi-“best of” for the long running show.

I will admit, I watched a full half hour episode last night before putting on my sleeping mask and rolling over.  My brain was still in writer mode and needed to work itself down some (I still dreamed of Danny Trejo naked, which did not make for very good dreams, he’s a good actor, but I have no desire to see the man naked).

It turns out that after midnight, the commercials get a little more interesting on the station I was watching.  Who knew there were still phone sex lines?  Who knew the adult retailer Adam & Eve had commercials?  Two commercials on each break were adult oriented.  I get it, the Cops fan base tends to be male and I have no objections to scantily clad women running around on my TV.  It could be worse.

This is more about shock than anything else.  With the advent of internet porn, video-on-demand, Cinemax’s softcore porn after dark, and reality shows about sex, the very idea that adverts for sex run on basic cable after dark kind of blows my mind.  Especially for phone sex… I thought those call centers had gone the way of the Dodo.  Guess that’s what I get for thinking…
