Writing Blurbs

In recent weeks, it has become very apparent that writing book blurbs is not my thing.  So, I started shopping around for someone else to do it.

Holy rusted metal, Batman!  I thought editors were expensive…  I found a handful of blurb writers charging between $100 and $500.  I found one that advertised 100 word blurb for $200 with no need to send my book, just fill out the form.  What?!?

Ok, I wrote 75,000 words.  And you expect me to believe that your 100 word blurb is worth $200?  I realize that the blurb is the 2nd most important part of hooking the reader, but I can buy a “how-to” book for less than $10 (which I did and realized I still sucked at it).

However, I consider those fees to be highway robbery.  This would be another area where I wonder if indies might be getting the shaft.  Yes, traditional authors have people who read their books and write their blurbs and make them sound like it’s the next best book on the planet.  Indies should have this service available as well… but let’s be reasonable.  Honestly, how long does it take to write 100 words after reading my 2 paragraph synopsis?

That does seem very expensive for the short amount of writing involved.
